Global National: Feb. 27, 2026 | Are AI layoffs in US a wake-up call for the Canadian workforce?

From Global News.

Canada’s economic output shrank in the fourth quarter, marking the slowest pace of annual growth in a decade, outside of the pandemic. But overall, spending was up, which bodes well for the economy in the months ahead. This data comes amid a major U.S. tech firm’s announcement of thousands of layoffs. The company plans to replace workers with artificial intelligence (AI). Heather Yourex-West looks at whether it’s a sign of changes to come for the Canadian workforce.

Another day has passed with no deal between the U.S. and Iran. President Donald Trump is keeping all options on the table when it comes to military force, telling reporters Friday he is “not happy” with how negotiations are going. As Jackson Proskow reports, concerns are rising about a potential U.S. strike on Iran with embassies pulling staff out of the Middle East and nations warning their citizens to leave immediately.

Pakistan has declared “open war” on neighbouring Afghanistan. Warplanes bombed Taliban targets in the Aghan capital and other major cities. They accuse Afghanistan of harbouring militants who’ve been launching attacks across the border. Vincent McAviney reports.

Tomorrow marks the 35th anniversary of the end of the first Gulf war. It began when Iraqi president Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait – prompting a coalition of countries, including Canada, to respond with military force. No Canadians were killed in the conflict, but many suffered post-traumatic stress and chronic illness. And as Heidi Petracek reports, today those same veterans are also feeling forgotten.
