Why it’s unlikely that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps will obey Trump’s call to disarm | DW News

From DW News.

President Trump has told Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to lay down its arms. The IRGC has grown into a powerful force within the country’s government, answering only to its Supreme Leader and overseeing its ballistic missile arsenal and launching attacks overseas. The Guard rose out of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution as a force meant to protect Iran’s theocratic system, before becoming enshrined in its constitution, operating in parallel to Iran’s regular armed forces, growing in prominence and power.

DW speaks to Siavush Randjbar-Daemi, Senior Lecturer in Modern Middle East History, University of St. Andrews, in the IRGC’s prominence in Iran
