From Global News.
People from all over Vancouver Island came to catch a glimpse of an unexpected takeover of sea lions Monday.
The animals have landed on a sandy spit in Deep Bay in droves, attracting visitors eager for a up-close glimpse. The sea lions come every year but usually stick to docks or floats in and around the marina.
“It’s a sight we’ve never seen out of National Geographic,” one visitor said.
According to federal regulations, people are required to stay at least 100 metres away from the marine mammals. In a statement the Department of Fisheries and Oceans said, “Approaching or interacting with them puts both people and wildlife at risk.”
