Chinese manufacturers of batteries and electric cars are increasingly focusing on Hungary as a gateway into Europe. Factories are being built there, partly to circumvent EU customs duties. Hungary is actively courting Chinese investment and has repeatedly blocked tougher EU measures against China. Within the EU, this has raised political concerns about unity and decision-making, as well as economic concerns about growing dependency and mounting pressure on Europe’s domestic automotive industry.
