Pakistan and Afghanistan have exchanged cross-border strikes for an eighth straight day, marking one of the most intense bouts of fighting between the neighbours in recent years.

In an interview with Global News, Ibrahim Bahis, a senior analyst in Afghanistan with the International Crisis Group, said Kabul has seen bombings, anti-aircraft fire and Pakistani military aircraft flying over the city.

Bahis warned the prolonged conflict could create conditions that allow militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban, to expand their operations.
