Donald Trump’s administration has banned federal agencies from using AI lab Anthropic’s tools after the company insisted that Claude, its main model, not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. Now the company has been declared a supply-chain risk.

In a conversation with The Economist’s editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei explains why his company pushed back against parts of a Pentagon contract. He argues the issue isn’t just about democratic values, but also whether the technology is reliable enough for the battlefield and who should ultimately control it.
