Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz sent a message to Lebanese President Michel Aoun Saturday, threatening further military strikes across Lebanon if he does not “uphold [an] agreement” and ensure the militant group Hezbollah is disarmed.
“These things are not happening,” Katz said at a press conference. “If things stand and stand against each other, the one who will pay the full price is the Lebanese government and Lebanon as a whole,” he added, noting it would be a “very heavy price.”
After the U.S. and Israel launched a joint operation against the Iranian regime on Sunday, Lebanon was dragged into the wider Middle East war the next day when Hezbollah fired at Israel. Since then, Israel’s latest military campaign has forced hundreds of thousands of Lebanese from their homes.
“We have no territorial claims against Lebanon, but we will not accept a situation where what existed for many years — firing from Lebanese territory toward the State of Israel – we will not allow a return to this situation,” Katz concluded.
