Canada “will continue to stand with Denmark and Greenland”: Carney on Arctic Security

From Global News.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says the “biggest physical security threat” in the Arctic right now is Russia.

Carney made to reporters during a Sunday press conference at the Nordic-Canadian summit in Oslo, where he met with the prime ministers of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.

Canada and the five Arctic allies agreed boost their collective defence,, security and resilience by collaborating more closely on defence procurement.

Asked if Canada would be “ready to contribute with military forces” if a NATO ally tried to annex Greenland – indirectly pointing to the U.S. administration, which recently threatened to do so – Carney said Canada will continue to “stand with Denmark and Greenland.” He also said his government will back the sovereignty of those nations with unspecified measures “as necessary.”
