American journalist and former CNN anchor Don Lemon is facing federal civil rights charges after being arrested Thursday night.

The veteran journalist is charged with conspiracy and interfering with the First Amendment rights of worshippers during a Jan. 18 protest at the Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, whose pastor works with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a separate capacity.

Another journalist and two protest participants were also arrested.

Lemon was covering the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday when he was taken into custody by federal agents, his lawyer said.

The charges come after a magistrate judge rejected prosecutors’ initial bid to charge the journalist last week.

Lemon, who was fired from CNN in 2023, has said he has no affiliation with the organization that entered the church and was there as a journalist covering the protest.
