Aboriginal title ruling puts BC landowners in limbo

The British Columbia Supreme Court’s landmark ruling about Aboriginal title to land in Richmond, B.C., is generating lots of debate and concern over the future of private property ownership rights.

The court’s decision grants Aboriginal title to the Cowichan tribes over part of the city and Fraser River, an area that used to be the tribes’ fishing village and was sold to settlers without their knowledge or consent.
