After decades hosting Afghans fleeing crises at home, Pakistan and Iran have ramped up deportations and forced millions back across the border to a country struggling to provide for them. Among them is single mother Arefa Ibrahimi who has been provided with a modest home in Bamiyan province. Despite it lacking running water and being far from schools, she’s relieved to have a place to feel safe.
