Anand addresses report Canadian government is “confident” Indian extortion threats “not continuing”

From Global News.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand responded Wednesday to a reported claim from a senior government official that they “are confident” extortion threats and violence carried out by Indian agents in Canada are “not continuing.”

Asked if the Canadian government believes these claims, and how they can be confident in them, Anand, said, “No country will ever have a pass, in terms of the domestic safety and security, of Canada, period.”

Anand added that there is an ongoing “law enforcement dialogue occurring at the most senior levels in the public service of Canada, together with their Indian counterparts.” A dialogue she said addresses the relationship between the two nations – including foreign extortion threats and violence.

The question posed to Anand comes as Canada deals with rising cases of extortion – something the Indian crime group, the Bishnoi Gang, is partly responsible for.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit India this week, where he is expected to partake in trade-related discussions.
