At least 8 skiers dead after avalanche near California’s Lake Tahoe

From Global News.

It was a race against the clock in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains when a group of back-country skiers, both clients and guides, were buried in an avalanche near Lake Tahoe on Tuesday morning.

The group had been in the final day of what the organizing company said was a three-day trip through the back country at Castle Peak.

“The bodies that were recovered were recovered fairly close together,” said Capt. Rusty Greene of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department.

Of the group, eight are dead while a ninth is missing but presumed dead. Six of the skiers managed to climb out of the snow.

Global’s Reggie Cecchini has more.
