BC ostrich cull: Birds “not dying today” as Supreme Court grants stay

From Global News.

Four hundred ostriches on a British Columbia farm which have faced an impending destruction have been thrown a lifeline after the Supreme Court of Canada granted a stay until the court mulls an application for leave to appeal.

“We need to find out the specifics, but we’ve been granted an interim stay by Supreme Court of Canada," said Katie Pasitney with the Universal Ostrich Farm. "The animals are not dying today, and they’re not probably dying tomorrow, but we are going to be allowed to exhaust our full legal options.”

The farm has been trying to prevent a cull of the ostriches for months after regulators ordered them destroyed following the birds’ infection of avian flu last year, but that destruction is now on pause. Victoria Femia reports.
