“Best leverage” is unity: Poilievre suggests “all-party committee” amid Canada-US trade tension

From Global News.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre took the podium at an event in Toronto Tuesday, sharing his vision for the future of Canada-U.S. relations amid trade tensions and a looming review of the North American free-trade agreement, CUSMA.

Though he claimed President Donald Trump’s “correction” of the U.S. trade system – which includes the heavy implementation of tariffs on dozens of nations – was “overdue,” Poilievre noted that the U.S. has, for years, exploited Canada, by profiting from “below-market-priced raw materials.”

On how Canada might turn potential negotiations with the U.S. in its favour, Poilievre said the government must leverage with Trump and “not declare a permanent rupture” against the country.

Poilievre’s suggestions included giving Washington access to buy critical Canadian minerals, keeping Chinese vehicles out of Canada – despite a recent deal struck by Prime Minister Mark Carney – and an “all-party committee” in the House of Commons that works towards unity in Ottawa and finding a solution to ongoing tensity with the U.S.

“Canada’s destiny will never be written in Washington, Beijing or anywhere else but by Canadians here at home,” Poilievre said.
