The commercial was meant to appeal to common sense Republicans. And the ad featuring Ronald Reagan caught the attention of President Donald Trump, exactly as the premier had intended. But the blowback was far more severe than the Ford government anticipated.

Trump claimed it was an attempt to influence the U.S. Supreme Court’s deliberation of the legality of tariffs. The U.S. announced it had terminated trade negotiations with Canada.

After a phone call with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ford said Ontario achieved its objective of initiating a conversation about tariffs and would pull the ad from the airwaves on Monday.

But as Global’s Colin D’Mello reports, the break down in trade talks comes at a critical time.
