Leaders of several Jewish organizations in the Toronto area called for urgent action Sunday after three synagogues were hit by gunfire in the past week.
“Canada is at a crossroads… This gunfire didn’t come from nowhere,” Noah Shack, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said at a weekend press conference. “Over the last two years, our Jewish community has been subject to increasing incidents of hate, intimidation, harassment, and violence,” he added.
Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree promised action against the “unacceptable” crimes, claiming the Liberal government would work strengthen laws to ensure hate is “punished” and “those who espouse hate are held to account.”
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw spoke about ongoing investigations, promising “relentless” pursuit to hold any suspects accountable. Furthermore, Demkiw confirmed increased police patrols and visits throughout the community – including at the synagogues that were struck.
