Canada secures hundreds of seats on flights, buses for citizens stuck in Middle East amid war

From Global News.

The Canadian government has reserved hundreds of seats for Canadians on commercial flights — and dozens via four buses — leaving the Gulf region as the Iran war escalates. They’ve also arranged one chartered flight, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Friday.

“As of this morning, more than 108,000 Canadians in the region have registered with Global Affairs,” Anand told reporters. “Of these, approximately 3,500 Canadians have contacted Global Affairs to request assistance in departing. We are sending information directly to Canadians about the assistance being offered,” she added.

If Canadians don’t utilize the available seats, the federal government will offer them to Europeans and others who will, Anand noted.

When asked if Canada was considering the use of the Canadian Armed Forces to help evacuate its citizens in the area, Anand said “all options” were being looked into, but iterated the danger of evacuations via seaway, as hostilities flare up between the U.S. and Iran.
