Caring for your Olympic medal, explained

From Reuters.

Years of hard training and sacrifice, participation in the Olympics and the lifelong dream that comes true with a medal: a symbol of glory that, unlike the achievement itself, can deteriorate over time.

For this reason, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum decided to bring to Milan a medal care kit, making it available to any member of Team USA who has won a medal, past or present, so they can take care of their shining piece of history.

The kit, explained Lindsay Flanagan Huban, Chief Content Officer of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum, contains the same supplies used in the museum in the U.S. to preserve metals, including acid‑free boxes, tissue paper, white cotton gloves, lint‑free wipes, and instructions on what to use and what not to use on the medals.
