Carney says toughening bail, immigration laws main priorities in meeting with RCMP

From Global News.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney met with police officials in Surrey, B.C., and said the federal government is taking measures to combat extortion threats not only in Surrey but across the country.

He added that the government continues to work on strengthening border and immigration laws, while providing more funding for both the RCMP and CBSA.

Efforts are also underway to toughen bail and sentencing laws in Canada.

"You have to prove you should get bail as opposed to a presumption of having bail. It provides for consecutive sentencing, tougher sentences for home invasions, for arson, all the things we’re seeing around extortion. There are 80 targeted amendments to the criminal code in Bill C-14 alone," Carney said.
