Could 2027 be the year China invades Taiwan?

2027 has been cited by some US officials as a possible date by which China wants to have the capacity to invade Taiwan, thereby taking control of the territory which it says is an integral part of China. Taiwan is a self-governed democracy.

Speaking to AFP in an exclusive interview, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te says he wants to ensure that “for China, there is never a day that is a good day to invade Taiwan,” but his government is currently struggling to pass a major defence spending bill in parliament.

What is the state of China-Taiwan relations? And could 2027 really be the year China invades Taiwan?
