After an incident where NATO air defences destroyed an Iranian ballistic missile headed into Turkish airspace Wednesday, NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte said a day later that the incident doesn’t provide immediate reason to invoke Article 5.

“Well, Article 5, I think, is not an order here and nobody’s talking about Article 5. And the most important thing is that our subsidiaries have seen yesterday that NATO’s so strong and so vigilant and even more vigilant, if possible, since Saturday because of the situation, of course, in the Middle East.” Rutte said.

NATO’s Article 5 specifies that an attack on one member of the alliance is an attack on all the others.
