As the world watches Iran’s blockade of ships carrying oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz, there are reports that tankers with links to China are being allowed through.

So far Beijing has remained relatively quiet about the US-Israel war with Iran.

China has been buying Iranian oil for years, helping to sustain the Islamic Republic throughout decades of international sanctions.

There are global fears about the economic effects of the war, but could it present an opportunity for Beijing?

President Xi Jinping has already been casting China as a more stable and reliable trading partner than the US following President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

Beijing has confirmed that an upcoming visit by President Trump to China has been postponed for several weeks.

Meanwhile, Washington has bolstered its military presence in the Gulf with assets from the Pacific region, where it has served as a deterrent to possible Chinese aggression against Taiwan.

We ask the BBC’s Beijing correspondent Laura Bicker what China stands to gain from the US-Israel war with Iran.
