People across India celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, on Monday with prayers, festive meals, firecrackers, and illuminated homes. Diwali was also celebrated across Canada, including in Brampton, Ontario.
Drone footage from Sivakasi, a southern Indian town known for its fireworks industry, showed colourful displays lighting up the night sky as residents marked the annual celebration.
Diwali, one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar, commemorates the return of Lord Rama to the northern city of Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana and rescuing his wife, Sita. According to Hindu legend, millions of lamps were lit to welcome Rama back after 14 years in exile.
The festival is also associated with Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. Devotees believe she blesses homes that are clean and brightly lit.
