Long-lasting power cuts, mounting rubbish and a hit to the tourism industry – Cuba’s energy crisis is deepening.

Fuel shortages have been worsened by the US blocking oil shipments from Venezuela, a long-standing ally in the region, to the island.

US President Donald Trump has called Cuba a "failed nation", saying it should make a deal with the US.

There are unconfirmed reports that the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is engaging in talks with the communist Castro leadership – turning to former leader Raul Castro’s grandson, Raul Guillermo Rodriguez.
