Electric turbochargers have only been used in production cars within the past few years, and I finally got behind the wheel to see how it feels. The 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S, in fact, uses two electric turbochargers, each with a 20kW motor planted between the turbine and compressor wheels to spin up the intake as quickly as possible, and independent of whether exhaust gases are there to help or not. It’s a fascinating technology, which leads me to the following questions which we’ll answer in the video:
1. What is an electric turbocharger?
2. How does an electric turbo work?
3. What are the advantages/disadvantages of an eTurbo?
4. Are electric turbos a good thing?
5. What is it like driving a car with electric turbos?
