FBI investigates Michigan church shooting as “act of targeted violence” that killed 4, injured 8

From Global News.

A gunman opened fire inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Michigan during a Sunday service before apparently setting the building ablaze. At least four people were killed and eight others were injured before police fatally shot the suspect, authorities said.

Local resident Tony Deck reported that a Silverado Z71 pickup truck had "ran itself into the building."

Special Agent in Charge at ATF’s Detroit Field Division, James Deir, stated that the perpetrator, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, used an "accelerant of some sort, we believe gasoline and lit the church on fire.”

“I can confirm at this time that the FBI is now leading the investigation and is investigating this as an act of targeted violence," Reuben Coleman, the Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office said.
