Images of floodwaters continuing to inundate homes, roads, and fields, paralysing daily life for residents of the town of Varades in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France, which has been on red alert since Thursday evening, 19 February 2026. In addition to this department, Météo-France has placed Charente-Maritime and Maine-et-Loire on red alert, the highest level. Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne have been downgraded to orange. With 37 consecutive days of rain, the Atlantic coast is experiencing its longest period of rainfall since records began in 1959.
