From Global News.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday the formation of a voluntary youth military service slated to begin by mid-2026. This move comes amid geopolitical threats and the unravelling of decades-long US security guarantees.
Macron said this paid service will have a 10-month duration and will be open to 18 and 19-year-olds. The initiative aims for 3,000 people in 2026, rises to 10,000 by 2030, and then 50,000 by 2035. However, according to Macron, these numbers “will be adjusted based on the evolution of threats.”
After completion of the program, participants can choose to return to civilian life, become a reservist, or stay in the armed forces. This announcement brings France in line with other European countries such as Germany and Denmark, who have similar initiatives.
