The most powerful production car ever, with nearly 3,000 horsepower, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, is… somehow slower around the Nurburgring than the 1,000+ horsepower Corvette ZR1?? But why?! We’ll break it all down in this video, by performing a deep dive analysis on three questions:
1). Do the cars have enough energy onboard for a complete full power lap?
2). Is there a speed at which the Yangwang U9 Xtreme can actually use its full power?
3). What speed, for the front and rear axles, does the U9X become power limited?

For the first question, we’ll analyze and compare each vehicle’s energy storage and power efficiency – how much energy can they actually put to the ground, and will this limit their lap times in any way, or is there an abundance of energy?

For the second question, we’ll figure out what speed the vehicle can apply full power, based on its weight and peak power of 2220 kW from a quad-motor powertrain. We’ll compare this to the Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO, which hold the all-time the Nürburgring lap record for any vehicle.

Finally, we’ll break down the power delivery at each axle, to determine what speed each axle will need to reach in order to become power limited – meaning at that speed, it can finally put down all 1110 kW of power (per axle). This will give us our final answer for how fast the car needs to travel to put down full power, which can lend some insight as to why the lap time is slower than the ZR1. We’ll end the video discussing what’s really important around the Nordschleife – grip – a function of both aerodynamic downforce as well as tire traction.
