Torrential rains swept through the Gaza strip on Thursday, flooding tents and destroying buildings already damaged by two years of war.

Rescue teams searched the wreckage of a home in Beit Lahiya that was brought down by heavy rain.

At least 13 buildings collapsed in the deluge and 27,000 tents were flooded, the media office of the Hamas-run Gaza government said Friday. It said 12 people are either dead or missing as a result of the storm.

The United Nations said insufficient drainage and waste management heightened the risk of disease.

Israel said it was meeting its obligations and accused agencies of inefficiency and failing to prevent theft by Hamas.
