As funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is set to expire – and currently exists solely on an extension – the White House has revealed U.S. President Donald Trump’s “end goal” in the matter.

As well as keeping the government funded, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Thursday, “The president is never going to cave on this administration’s core promise to deport illegal aliens from our country” – operations that are conducted by agencies under the DHS.

Asked the consequences if no agreement is reached between Republicans and Democrats by next Friday’s deadline, Leavitt said, “there will be grave repercussions” not only for DHS agencies like ICE [Immigrations and Customs Enforcement] and the U.S. Border Patrol, but for “the American people who those agencies serve.”

ICE and the U.S. Border Patrol have faced mass scrutiny in the last two months following the killing of two Minnesota residents by officers from either agency amid immigration protests.

Though Leavitt said Trump was “willing to discuss” some Democratic policy demands related to continued DHS funding – without specifying – she ruled others out, dubbing them “non-starters.”
