On Monday night, Russia launched 300 drones and what Ukrainian authorities say was a substantial number of missiles. In the dead of winter, Russia is striking Ukraine’s energy grid, forcing Ukrainians to shelter underground. This comes as Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov suggests that Greenland is not a natural part of Denmark.

McGill associate professor Maria Popova said, “Both Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and now these American threats to its allies are heralding the same kind of process which is the return to the age of empires.”

Popova also suggested that Russia is likely enjoying NATO’s concern after U.S. President Donald Trump floated the idea of taking over Greenland.
