Heavy rains in Peru’s southern Arequipa region this week triggered flooding and landslides, leaving at least two people dead and causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

The downpours began on Thursday, inundating residential areas and turning roads into channels of mud. Officials said the victims included one man struck by lightning and an older woman who died when a river overflowed.

Drone footage from Peru’s Cayma District showed streets swamped by mud.
