“How about Charter Rights for victims”: Doug Ford slams Canada’s bail reform laws

From Global News.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized Canada’s criminal justice system and its bail reform laws. “We need to make sure we’re putting the rights of victims ahead of criminals,” Ford said at a Monday press conference.

The premier stated “How about the Charter Rights of victims? Criminals are out on the streets repeating, and repeating ,and repeating offences. That’s why last week, we wrote to the federal government asking them to legalize the use of pepper spray for self-defence.”

“Let’s say a woman is leaving a job at night and walking home — she needs something to defend herself.” Ford said.

“Did we ever see this 10 year ago? Fifteen years ago? No, we’ve never seen this (offenders repeatedly getting out on bail),” he added,

Ford also revealed his government is pushing the federal government to collect DNA from “people arrested on serious sexual offences.
