From DW News.
In a major foreign policy speech, Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, set out a more assertive vision for Germany’s global role. Merz called for unity among European allies amid heightened tensions with the U.S. over Donald Trump’s threats to take over Greenland.
Addressing parliament, Merz stated that Germany aspires to be part of an agile network of sovereign states while upholding a rules-based order. He emphasized that Germany would not be intimidated by US threats of trade tariffs. Referring to Trump casting doubt on the commitment of NATO allies, Merz said that he would not allow German soldiers who served in Afghanistan to be belittled.
