U.S. President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro had their first meeting on Tuesday at the White House.

The encounter was a test of whether they could ease tensions despite clashing ideologies and reputations for unpredictability.

Trump, who has voiced a desire for American dominance over all of Latin America, has in recent months had an up-and-down relationship with Petro, a former anti-imperialist guerrilla who was elected Colombia’s president in 2022.

Petro, speaking to the press after the meeting, said Trump told him: "I like you." Trump called Petro "terrific" and said "we get along great."
