Jakarta is overcrowded, polluted, and rapidly sinking into the Java Sea. So the government decided to build a futuristic, green new capital on the island of Borneo. Despite concerns from environmental groups and Indigenous communities, the project is now nearly four years into construction, and local officials say plans are on track for Nusantara to become Indonesia’s new political capital by 2028.
