From DW News.
Irish President-elect Catherine Connolly spoke to supporters after winning over 63% of the vote in elections that were marred by record numbers of spoiled votes. Ballots included two names: Left-wing independent Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of the center-right Fine Gael party.
A conservative candidate wasn’t able to garner enough parliamentary support to be nominated for the ballot. In a sign of protest, conservatives urged voters to taint their votes so they wouldn’t be counted. A record 13% of ballots were marred in some way and left uncounted.
Connolly’s 7-year term will begin on November 11, when she replaces outgoing President 84-year-old Michael Higgins.
