At his final event in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed for closer business and political ties between Australia and Canada, to try and hedge against Donald Trump’s tariff strategy.

“It’s monetizing their current indispensable position in a variety of economic relations — virtually all economic relationships. You can do that for a time, but you can’t do that forever.” Carney said.

The Prime Minister highlighted a difference in rhetoric when dealing with the U.S. president behind closed doors, suggesting Trump is more interested in his viewpoints in private, while adding “it’s not easy.”
