At the "People’s State of the Union" event, held outside prior to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech inside Congress, media commentators Joy Reid and Katie Phang introduced the rally.

Hosted by MeidasTouch, MoveOn Civic Action and other community organizing groups, the event
was framed as offering truth by Reid and Phang in contrast to the framing Trump would offer in his speech before Congress and the nation.
