Liberals hoping to get a “new model to Ingersoll” after latest round of cuts from GM

From Global News.

After yet another automaker, General Motors (GM) announced it was cutting production in Ontario, Canada’s Innovation Minister Melanie Joly said during question period on Tuesday that the Liberals are putting together a “response group” with their “goal to bring back a new model to Ingersoll.” GM had announced earlier in the day it was ending production of its BrightDrop electric delivery van.

Joly said she had spoken to the head of GM Canada, the president of Unifor as well as Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Ontario Finance Minister Vic Fedelli to find a solution in the wake of the GM decision on Tuesday. It follows Stellantis last week saying it would be moving its planned production of its Jeep Compass from its plant in Brampton, Ont., to Illinois, threatening 3,000 workers at the Canadian facility.

“(Joly) is bragging about who she gets on the phone. She’s bragging about the ‘tough talks’ she’s having. Here’s the thing: If they actually included a jobs protection clause in the contract, all they have to do is invoke it,” Conservative MP Andrew Scheer said. “I’m starting to worry that they signed a $15 billion deal with Stellantis and didn’t get a guarantee to protect those Canadian jobs,” he added.
