Lobster fishers go to court to have Mi’kmaq fishery declared illegal

A group of commercial lobster harvesters in Nova Scotia want the courts to settle a long-simmering fight over Indigenous fishing rights.

Five years ago, one Mi’kmaq First Nation launched its own lobster fishery outside of the regulated season. Since then, tensions between the band and commercial fishers have flared.

The Sipekne’katik First Nation argues the case should be dismissed.
