The fires that tore through Los Angeles in January 2025 killed 31 people and razed more than 16,000 buildings. Nine months on, some of the homes that survived are still uninhabitable. Tests have found heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and zinc, as well as volatile organic compounds like cyanide and furfural. Many residents are still struggling to get insurance companies to pay up, with unclear standards around smoke claims.
