Louvre reopens for 1st time since brazen daylight heist

From Global News.

Tourists welcomed the reopening of the Louvre museum on Wednesday but questioned whether security measures were sufficient, following the theft of historic royal jewellery worth an estimated US$102 million on Sunday.

Visitors lined up to enter through the Louvre’s glass pyramid for the first time since the brazen robbery, in which hooded assailants broke through a second-floor window using a stolen movers’ lift before making off with jewels from the royal collection.

"It’s certainly increased our fascination with the area, we are not typically museum individuals but knowing that there had just been a heist pulled off in broad daylight certainly increased the profile of the gallery, no doubt," Canadian tourist Antony Kabuasa said.

The eight items of stolen jewellery included a tiara and earrings from the set of Queen Marie-Amelie and Queen Hortense, of the early 19th century. The crown of Empress Eugenie was found outside the museum, apparently dropped during the getaway.
