Massive 4km-long landslide devastates Sicily town

From Global News.

About 1500 people have been forced to evacuate their homes after a huge landslide in Sicilian town of Niscemi. The four-kilometer-long slide began on Sunday, following the passage of Cyclone Harry, which stalled over Sicily for two full days. The slide has been growing by up to 10 metres per day.

City officials in Niscemi say all homes within 70 metres of the dropoff are expected to be lost and the city’s historic centre is in danger.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared a state of emergency for the Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria regions and set aside 100 million euros for the initial needs of the areas worst hit by Cyclone Harry.

“We had the first landslide 30 years ago, and no one ever did anything," one resident said.
