Military plane crash in Bolivia kills at least 20, scatters cash cargo

From Global News.

At least 20 people were killed and 30 more were injured on Friday evening after a Bolivian Air Force Hercules aircraft — which was carrying new banknotes from the country’s central bank — crashed onto a busy avenue in El Alto, near Bolivia’s capital La Paz.

The military aircraft had departed from Santa Cruz and crashed after landing and skidding off the runway onto a neighbouring avenue, according to local authorities.

"I want to make it clear to those who are trying to take money from the plane involved in this tragedy that this money has no legal value since it has not been issued by the Central Bank and does not have a serial number," Defence Minister Marcelo Salinas said.

Authorities burned the remaining banknotes at the scene, and the Central Bank of Bolivia announced that all Series B bills in denominations of 10, 20, and 50 bolivianos found on the aircraft would lose legal tender status.

Local residents confronted police and expressed frustration over economic hardship, with some demanding that the money be distributed to poor families rather than destroyed.
