American snowboarding Olympian Nick Baumgartner’s inspirational story resonates with many at the Winter Games — making it to the top of their game didn’t always come easy, financially.

Baumgartner, who won a gold medal in the 2022 Games in Beijing at age 40, told Reuters at Milano Cortina it took years of pouring concrete and unemployment checks before his Olympic dream became a reality.
