New York City’s iconic Times Square was covered in snow early on Monday as a major snowstorm swept through the northeastern United States, bringing heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
“This is a once in a lifetime storm," said Elizabeth Axel, who was out walking her dog Snoop in northern Manhattan. "My dog loves it. And I’m, uh, I’m just going to hunker down inside.”
“Had it with the snow. This winter has been too cold, too snowy, too miserable. I’m ready for it to be over,” said another resident Peter Duffy.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency and ordered non-essential vehicles off city roads from Sunday night to noon Monday, saying plows and emergency crews needed the streets clear as snowfall intensified. The city is under its first blizzard warning since 2016.
