Pakistan and Afghanistan have pledged to respect a ceasefire, mediated by Turkey and Qatar, after more than a week of deadly fighting.

The Taliban government’s chief spokesperson and Pakistan’s defence minister confirmed the truce on Sunday.

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said Monday that the fragile truce is dependent on the Taliban’s ability to reign in militants who the Pakistani government says have launched attacks from inside Afghanistan.

Afghanistan denies harbouring militants who carry out attacks in the border areas.
